Last night Tom dragged me to see The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and I’m glad he did. I probably never would have gone to see an animated flick in theatres, which is obviously to my detriment: it was awesome. Need more convincing?

My “Too Large of an Order” Burger at The Counter

1/3 lb beef. Roasted green chilis. Honey cured bacon. Fried egg. Lettuce. Tomatoes. Caramelized onions. Jalapeno jack cheese. Roasted garlic aioli. All on a honey wheat bun. Not to mention the fried pickles, sweet potatoes fries, shoe string onion rings, and beer to go along with it. More than you can ask for lunch at The Counter before the games ahead at the TeachStreet Christmas Bonanza.

That’s an incredible burger. Only suggestion - add avocado.

This reminds me of Father’s Office - one of the best burgers I’ve ever had.

Omar: there’s a Counter exactly 0.75 blocks from my apartment. It’s the absolute opposite of Father’s Office in one aspect: at FO, you can’t change the burger at all. At the Counter, you can change anything and everything you want. I still like FO better.

Conclusion: LA is the burger capital of the world.

As cynical as my perspective is when it comes to Iraq, at least there’s oil there and a there was a recent history of modern, industrialized civilization. Maybe the surge bought democracy, and American oil companies are going to skim forty billion dollars worth of oil off of the newly democratized Iraq that they wouldn’t have been able to had we not surged. That looks like a shitty deal, but at least it sorta worked and there’s upside potential. When it comes to Afghanistan, (1) I’m not nearly so optimistic about the chance to produce a stable government with our surgetastic military might, because the region has no history of stable government; and (2) Even if it works, I don’t see what we get out of it. Are we really going to pay 45 billion dollars for the prayer that we’ll somewhere calm from which to attack Al Qaeda forces in Pakistan?

$45 billion is what? $150 per US resident. We need to start charging war taxes. Among other things, a problem with both these “wars” is that very few of us actually feel that we’re at war in our day-to-day lives.

I am an independent contractor. No company gives me health insurance. However, I am fortunate enough to be able to pay for my own plan through the Freelancers Union. I don’t get sick or injured often and I am, for the most part, blessed with a well and able body.

I just got an email saying my health insurance monthly bill will increase by 21% in 2010. I am used to health insurance rates going up every year—but I wasn’t prepared for what I found when I investigated the “benefits” of my new plan. To wit:

*My deductible is increasing by 16%

*My co-insurance by 50%

*My out-of-network pocket max by 23%

*My generic prescription drug co-pay by 50%

*And lab tests in an outpatient facility went from being free to “subject to deductible and co-insurance”

(On the bright side: if I become diabetic or need a colonoscopy I’ll save money.)

In essence, I’m paying a lot more for a lot less. Why is this happening? I feel like punching a kitten. But then I’d need to pay a vet bill…

My insurance company did this to me every year when I was buying individual coverage. Look into switching if possible. Health insurance companies don’t think you’ll shop around or leave, so they keep raising prices every year, because that’s what people expect. But no, health care has not gotten 20% more expensive in the last year - they’re just gouging you.

Someone needs to create an insurance plan that allows only 18-40 year olds as members, with high deductibles, and prices it at around $50-75 a month. That would be a boon to younger workers (as would single-payer nationalized insurance, but let’s not open that can of worms).

Recently on your show, you tapped into a sore spot in our nation’s psyche: the eternal struggle between mayonnaise and Miracle Whip. And surprisingly, for a man of your impeccable intellect, you’ve chosen the wrong side. A side doomed to a painful, drawn-out, utter and complete defeat. Like the Plantagenets in the Hundred Years’ War. Or whichever on was the cat in “Tom and Jerry.”

Mr. Colbert, we found your attacks a little harsh, occasionally funny, and at times, wholly inaccurate (for the record, our target is 18-35, not 34). But unlike most advertisers who are so mayo, who would back down at the slightest whiff of controversy, and pull their advertising from not just your show but from your entire network and all its sister entities – we intend to do the opposite.
